Project 1
My inspiration come from many different artists but the first artist that really caught my eyes was Caterina Tiazzoldi. More specifically her "Onion Pinch" project. I love the idea of the students being able to interact and use my final project. Also, I would also like to have my project be interesting to look at from a far as well as up close. Caterina really does this in the small sculpture on the website and I would love to embody that as well.
Another artistic influence is by Matt Gagnon. He has a project called the "Knit Fort" and it is just beautiful. What I love about this the most is that he really plays with nature and, with UWF being on a nature preserve, I thought that would be a wonderful aspect to me project. It would not just encourage the students to come and play but also have trees and flowers and vines play.
My new space on the "Argo mall" strip will connect all the passing student, it will connect the students with their inner child, and it will connect the sudents with nature. We live in a world that is completely controlled by computer screens and this will be a short escape from their phone screen (even if it is just a passing glance).
I really invasion my space to become a metaphor of everyones inner child. In every one of us there is a desire to climb trees again or play tag in the grass one more time but our bodies are older and social norms say that would be an odd thing for an adult but my space should really invite our curiosity.
Aspects of this are already being done on campus. For example, the natures trails on the edge of campus. Also you can rent canoes can explore the water for a day. This really gets the students involved and interacting with the nature surrounding campus. My other aspect of envying play and relaxation is not really found anywhere on campus.
With my new project on campus I really what the message to be that in our short and stressful time in college we have to remember how to be silly. We have to remember that life is not all that serious because we all die in the end and it doesn't really matter if you got a D on that statistics exam. So, I say have fun.
